If you’re a truck driver, adding a HazMat endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) can open doors to exciting opportunities. But, exactly how to get a HazMat endorsement?
Check Your Eligibility
Before you embark on this journey, make sure you meet the basic hazmat endorsement requirements. You must have a valid CDL and be at least 21 years old. Wondering, “Can I get a HazMat endorsement with a felony?” Well, this is where the suspense comes in. You’ll need to undergo a thorough background check, so past felonies, particularly those related to transportation security, might pose a hurdle. It’s always best to check specific guidelines in your state.
Take the HazMat Endorsement Class
Once you’re sure you’re eligible, it’s time to hit the books. Enroll in a HazMat endorsement class to learn about hazardous materials transportation. This is where you learn the ins and outs, from understanding placards to knowing the types of materials you’ll be handling. This class will prepare you for the road and the written test, so pay attention!
This course can be completed online and there are a plethora of schools to choose from. Here are a few:
There are also apps you can use to prepare for your HazMat test, I use and have used the CDL Prep Test app, this link is for the Apple App Store, but I’ve included the likeness below. You can set your state in the app and get practice questions which I have found very helpful.

Enroll Online
Pre-Enroll online at the TSA website through the online application unless you are licensed in one of the following states. If you are licensed in one of these states you must visit your local DMV office:
Pass the Written Test
Armed with newfound knowledge, head to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take the hazmat endorsement written test. You’ll face questions about safety protocols, handling emergencies, and more. It’s always a good idea to book an appointment if you can. Take a look at how far out the appointments are, you may want to get this booked first!
Undergo a Background Check
To ensure the safety of everyone on the road, you’ll need to undergo a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hazmat endorsement background check. This involves fingerprinting and a review of your criminal history. The cost and time it takes can vary, but plan for a minimum of 45 days.
HazMat Endorsement Cost
- $99 to $139 for the class
- $86.50 for the application
- Testing fee’s vary by state
Pairings
Like wine, HazMat has pairings and below are the two most common.
TWIC Card
Depending on the state you are licensed in the TWIC background can be used for your HazMat background, check your state for details. See our Understanding TWIC Card Requirements for Truck Drivers article for more information on obtaining your TWIC.
HazMat and Tanker Endorsement
The HazMat Endorsement (H) can be upgraded to a HazMat and Tanker Endorsement (X). The process can vary by state, but generally speaking all you need is the extra DMV Tanker Test to supersize this endorsement.
Conclusion
The HazMat endorsement isn’t free, between the class, test, and background check, costs can add up. Consider it an investment in your trucking future, unlocking better job opportunities and potentially higher pay.
Here at Miles 2 Go Transport we are running dedicated FedEx Custom Critical loads and there is an opportunity to use both your HazMat endorsement and TWIC Card to increase your pay. Take a look at Why Drive M2GT for more information.
