Staying awake and alert as a professional truck driver is no easy feat. It’s a job that requires you to be constantly vigilant, alert, and ready to react, even during those long stretches of open road that seem to go on forever. I’m a team truck driver and specifically I drive nights, so I will talk about general ideas and then I’m going to dive into my specific regimen.

Staying Awake and Alert: Diet

First and foremost, let’s talk about diet. Eating the right foods can make a significant difference in how alert you feel behind the wheel. It’s tempting to grab fast food or snacks for convenience, but these can lead to energy crashes. Instead, focus on foods that provide sustained energy.

Fruits, nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins are your best friends. They provide the nutrients your body needs to keep going without the dreaded sugar crash.

I’m a big fan of Joe Rogan’s podcast and find that 3 hours can pass quickly with his long format. I also listen to Audiobooks, I’m currently working my way through the Game of Thrones series and have listened to the Harry Potter books several times through.

I’m a huge fan of NeuroGum, but it also comes in the form of mints. You can buy it online, but I have also found it at CVS and occasionally Walmart.

Ginseng and B Vitamins

Sleep is probably the most critical factor in staying alert. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule can make all the difference.

Plan your route ahead of time to avoid unexpected surprises. Know where rest stops and fuel stations are, and factor in time for breaks. This planning helps reduce stress and allows you to focus on driving safely.

Take regular breaks, even if you don’t feel tired. Stretch, walk, and clear your mind. Practicing mindfulness techniques like deep breathing can help you stay calm and focused.

My Routine

I’ve hinted at my routine throughout the article, but here are the nuts and bolts.

First of all, I’ve adopted intermittent fasting (see my blog Benefits of Intermittent Fasting) which, for me means that I don’t eat during my shift. I feel that not eating helps me avoid the sugar spikes and keeps me from being distracted while driving.

Second, I take my dog Thumper on the road so getting out and stretching my legs is easier because I know he wants to go too. Plus, I feel safer getting out of my truck at night with my big guy by my side.

Third, since I’m in my fasting window and not eating, I drink lots of water and chew a couple pieces of NeuroGum each night.

Last, as I mentioned I have my audiobooks and podcasts. I mentioned Joe Rogan earlier, but I’ve picked up several of these ideas listening to him as he and his guests speak on wide variety of topics.
