Staying awake and alert as a professional truck driver is no easy feat. It’s a job that requires you to be constantly vigilant, alert, and ready to react, even during those long stretches of open road that seem to go on forever. I’m a team truck driver, and specifically I drive nights, so I’ll cover the general ideas first and then dive into my own regimen.

A quick, important note before we start: the tips below are what work for me and for a lot of drivers, but fatigue is serious and personal. Nothing here replaces real sleep or medical advice. If you’re fighting genuine exhaustion, the right move is always to stop and rest, not to push through with a trick. No load is worth driving impaired by fatigue.

Staying Awake and Alert: Diet

First and foremost, let’s talk about diet. Eating the right foods can make a significant difference in how alert you feel behind the wheel. It’s tempting to grab fast food or snacks for convenience, but these can lead to energy crashes. Instead, focus on foods that provide sustained energy.

Foods to Keep You Energized

Fruits, nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins are your best friends. They provide the nutrients your body needs to keep going without the dreaded sugar crash. For more on eating well from the cab, see our truck meal planning guide.

Avoiding the Energy Zappers

Steer clear of heavy meals and sugary snacks. These can make you feel sluggish and sleepy, which is the last thing you want when you’re driving a big rig down the highway.

Staying Awake and Alert: Hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining alertness. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased concentration. Keep a bottle of water within arm’s reach and take regular sips throughout the day or night. Remember, coffee and energy drinks can dehydrate you, so balance them with plenty of water.

Staying Awake and Alert: Exercise

Whenever you make a stop, take a few minutes to stretch and walk around. Simple exercises like lunges, squats, and arm stretches can do wonders for your circulation and overall alertness. It’s amazing how a quick five-minute routine can refresh your body and mind.

Regular exercise, even in small doses, helps to maintain your overall health and keeps your mind sharp. It’s a simple yet effective way to combat fatigue and stay focused on the road ahead.

Staying Awake and Alert: Entertainment

Keeping your mind engaged is crucial during long hauls. Sure, the hum of the tires on the road can be soothing, but it can also lull you into a dangerous state of drowsiness. Here are some entertainment options to keep you alert:

Audiobooks and Podcasts

Audiobooks and podcasts are fantastic companions on the road. They keep your mind active and can even be educational. Choose genres or topics that interest you, whether it’s thriller novels or science podcasts. They can transform your driving experience into a journey of learning and entertainment.

I’m a big fan of Joe Rogan’s podcast and find that 3 hours can pass quickly with his long format. I also listen to audiobooks. I’m currently working my way through the Game of Thrones series and have listened to the Harry Potter books several times through.

Music Playlists

Create playlists that keep you energized. Upbeat tunes can boost your mood and help you stay focused. Sing along if you like. It’s a great way to keep your spirits high and your mind active.

I like Spotify for the music and podcast options.

Staying Awake and Alert: Supplements

While a balanced diet is key, sometimes you want an extra boost. A few supplements are popular with drivers for alertness and focus. One general note before this section: supplements affect everyone differently and can interact with medications or conditions, so it’s genuinely worth running anything new past your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you take other medications.

Caffeine and L-Theanine

A combination of caffeine and L-Theanine is popular for providing a smoother energy boost without the jitters. L-Theanine, found in green tea, is often paired with caffeine to support alertness and focus.

Neuro Gum Energy and Focus peppermint pouch

Full disclosure: the NeuroGum links in this post are my referral links. You get 20% off your order, and I get 20% off my next order when you use them. I only recommend it because I genuinely use it every night.

I’m a huge fan of NeuroGum (caffeine + L-Theanine in a gum, and it comes as mints too). It’s my secret weapon on a night shift. You can buy it online, and I’ve also found it at CVS and occasionally Walmart.

Ginseng and B Vitamins

Ginseng and B vitamins are also popular for their energy-supporting properties. As with any supplement, check with a healthcare professional before adding them to your routine.

Staying Awake and Alert: Sleep

Sleep is probably the most critical factor in staying alert. There’s no supplement, playlist, or trick that substitutes for it. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule can make all the difference.

Creating a Restful Environment

Create a sleep-friendly environment in your sleeper berth. Use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block out light, and earplugs or white noise to drown out disturbances. A comfortable mattress and pillow are essential for good sleep.

The Power of Naps

Don’t underestimate the power of a good nap. Even a short 20-minute nap can recharge your batteries and improve your focus. Just be sure to park in a safe location before you doze off. I’m fond of using rest areas, and since I run Trucker Path for my backup mapping, it shows me upcoming rest areas on my route. (For more on parking options, see our guide to truck parking in highway rest areas.)

Driver Safety Tips: Staying Safe on the Road

Let’s talk about safety. After all, getting home safe is always the goal. Being alert isn’t just about avoiding fatigue; it’s about being prepared for anything the road throws your way.

Planning Your Route

Plan your route ahead of time to avoid unexpected surprises. Know where rest stops and fuel stations are, and factor in time for breaks. This planning helps reduce stress and lets you focus on driving safely. I use Trucker Path for route planning, and it shows upcoming truck stops and rest areas in case you need a break.

Regular Breaks and Mindfulness

Take regular breaks, even if you don’t feel tired. Stretch, walk, and clear your mind. And remember that your Hours of Service breaks exist for exactly this reason. Practicing mindfulness techniques like deep breathing can help you stay calm and focused.

My Routine

I’ve hinted at my routine throughout the article, but here are the nuts and bolts.

First, I practice intermittent fasting (see my post on the Benefits of Intermittent Fasting), which for me means I don’t eat during my shift. I find that not eating helps me avoid sugar spikes and keeps me from feeling distracted or sluggish while driving. That’s what works for me. Everyone’s different, so figure out what suits your body.

Thumper in the truck leaning out window

Second, I take my dog Thumper on the road, so getting out and stretching my legs is easier because I know he wants to go too. Plus, I feel safer getting out of my truck at night with my big guy by my side.

Third, since I’m in my fasting window and not eating, I drink lots of water and chew a couple pieces of NeuroGum each night.

Last, as I mentioned, I have my audiobooks and podcasts. I mentioned Joe Rogan earlier, and I’ve picked up several of these ideas listening to him, since he and his guests cover such a wide variety of topics.

Conclusion

Staying awake and alert as a professional truck driver is all about balance: diet, hydration, exercise, entertainment, supplements, and above all, sleep. It’s about taking care of your body and mind so you can do your job safely and effectively. But when it comes down to it, if you’re truly too tired to drive safely, the only right answer is to stop and rest.

Remember, the road is your office, and just like in any other office, taking care of yourself is key to doing your best work. Keep the shiny side up!
